RESTORATION AND REPRODUCTION OF A PHOTOGRAPH OF HENRI MATISSE IN NEW YORK CITY

A rare 1930 photograph of Henri Matisse, taken by his son Pierre Matisse during the artist's visit to New York City, was professionally restored for the residents of 10 Mitchell Place, where Matisse stayed. After careful cleaning and archival scanning, the image underwent extensive digital restoration to remove chemical stains, discoloration, scratches, and other age-related damage. The restored photograph was reproduced as a large-format archival print for permanent display in the building's foyer, preserving an extraordinary connection between one of the twentieth century's greatest artists and New York City's cultural history.

When the name Henri Matisse is mentioned, most people envision the sunlit landscapes of southern France, vibrant Fauvist paintings, or the colorful paper cut-outs that defined the final years of his career. Rarely does one associate the pioneering French artist with the skyline of New York City. Yet a remarkable photograph captures Matisse in an unexpected setting, relaxing on the rooftop of an apartment building with the Queensboro Bridge, Roosevelt Island, and the borough of Queens stretching across the background.

The photograph was taken in 1930 by Matisse's son, Pierre Matisse, a distinguished art dealer whose gallery on East 57th Street became one of the most influential promoters of modern European art in the United States. Through his gallery, Pierre introduced American audiences and collectors to many of the leading artists of the twentieth century, including his father, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, and others who helped shape the modern art movement.

This restoration project was commissioned by the residents of 10 Mitchell Place, the Manhattan apartment building where Henri Matisse stayed during his visit to New York City while visiting his son. The photograph represents a unique connection between one of the world's greatest artists and a building that remains part of New York City's cultural history.

The original photographic print was carefully surface cleaned before being professionally scanned at archival resolution. Extensive digital restoration was then performed to eliminate chemical staining, discoloration, scratches, abrasions, and other age-related damage while faithfully preserving the character and detail of the original photograph. Once the restoration was complete, a large-format archival print was produced for permanent display in the building's foyer, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate this rare glimpse of Henri Matisse in New York City for generations to come.
